School Swimming
At The Acorns, we ensure that all pupils in KS2 have the opportunity to swim for at least 6 weeks each academic year. This starts in Year 3 and progresses to Y6.
Each term, a different class visits the Ellesmere Port Sports Village where trained Brio swimming instructors and school staff, who are also trained in school swimming instruction, support our pupils to progress well in their swimming confidence and competance.
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
We assess our pupils at the end of KS2 for the 3 areas listed above. We then report on this within our PE and Sports Grant document.
Pupils who are identifed as confident, strong swimmers, are invited to attend the yearly SSP Swimming Gala, held at The Ellesmere Port Sports Village.
