P.E. & Sports Grant

Mr. N Painter - Physical Education Subject Leader

The Government provides a  ‘Sport Premium’ to support the delivery of PE and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced, and allocated directly to primary schools across England, providing them with a dedicated resource to invest in PE and sport.

The funding is allocated through a lump sum for each school and a per-pupil top-up mechanism. The formula references the number of primary-aged pupils (i.e. children between the ages of 5 and 11). All schools with seventeen or more primary-aged pupils will receive a lump sum of £16,000 plus a premium of £10 per pupil.

This academic year we will be working closely with Active Cheshire to ensure each child exceeds their daily physical activity recommendation of 30 minutes each day as part of our ‘Active Kids Pledge’. This will be achieved through a 10 minutes daily mile and 20 minutes of active break time, plus additional time across the week from 2 hours of PE and after/before school club participation.

Through our partnership with Active Cheshire we believe we can ensure each child at The Acorns will have the best opportunity to develop good habits of regular physical activity. We also believe that this will have a positive impact on the happiness, confidence and well-being of all of our children.

At The Acorns we believe that our children deserve the best teaching and learning in all areas of the curriculum, therefore we will be spending considerably more than the Sports Grant in order to provide all of your children with the best Physical Education possible.

Our aim is to provide all children at The Acorns with at least 2 hours of high quality, enjoyable and challenging physical education, as well as ensuring that children are being as active as possibe during break and lunch times. A high priority of ours in recent years has been to aim to develop our staff to become excellent PE teachers. We are using the Primary Sports Grant to ensure that this happens quickly and is consistent over time.

"Our Teacher is a fun and amazing PE teacher - our teacher and coach are both equally good at teaching PE," Year 3 Child

We currently work with the Beth Tweddle Gymnastics Company to deliver high quality Gymnastics lessons to all of our children. This also allows our staff to work alongside qualified, expereicned coaches to gain valuable skills and develop into quality Physical Education teachers.

"We do a lot - we learn different moves and sequences for our performances," Year 4 Child.

"All children love participating in these sessions as they can clearly see how they have progressed week on week," Year 5 Teacher

"I'm learning real skills with really good coaches, the coaches are easier to understand. The coaches talk to the teachers a lot and the teacher always joins in," Year 4 Child

Throughout the year, our dedicated staff also run a range of after school sporting clubs. In additional to this, we offer after school sports clubs run by professionally trained coaches.

"I'm also enjoying the sessions and finding it great for my own professional development," Year 3 Teacher

"I have loved teaching at The Acorns. It has been a pleasure to teach their pupils, who have been extremely well behaved, and keen to learn new skills in every lesson. Teachers have been very welcome and supportive during my lessons. I look forward to continuing our programme after half term," Total Gymnasticstics coaches.

Last year we provided opportunities for our children to expereince inspiration sporting events. 10 of our Year 6 children attended a match day experience at Cheshire Phioenix, and a further 30 children from across the school atten the National Youth Trampolining Competition at The Liverpool Echo Arena.
